The Technical Services Department provides advisory and project support to SFNS member First Nations in the areas of housing, infrastructure, and community development. We aim to support community-led projects with practical guidance and technical insight.

Technical Services activities are organized under 5 main areas. With each area requiring unique skill sets and training, the department is staffed accordingly, where each staff member’s area of expertise falls under one of these five areas:

Service Areas
1. Capital Projects
- The Technical Services department provides support to member First Nations capital projects through all project phases including feasibility study, planning and design, and construction.
- Capital project services include assisting with the minor capital application and project approval requests, assisted with drafting of tender documents such the RFP, reviewing proposals, and familiarizing with regulations, studies and reports relevant to the project.
2. Asset Management
- Technical Services Department utilizes ArcGIS and AutoCAD software to support project planning and cost estimating.
- Development of Asset Management Plans
- GIS tools are used to plan and monitor housing and infrastructure projects, while drafting of scaled and dimensioned AutoCAD drawings support project planning and cost estimating. Conceptual drawings are reviewed by First Nation before project enters detailed design phase.
3. Inspection Services
- Includes weekly housing inspections in community coordinated with First Nation Housing departments and are conducted through all phases of construction.
- Inspector identifies health and safety deficiencies and determines required repairs for continued safe occupancy of home. Initial inspections identify building deficiencies; subsequent inspections monitor progress to ensure work conforms to building codes and approved scope of work.
4. Training and Capacity Development
- The department manages a First Nations Training budget, which provides resources for member First Nation staff to attend technical training, conferences and workshops.
- The department coordinates regional training such as annual FNIIP update and training specific to housing.
5. Annual Reporting
- Department assists member First Nations in completing annual reports such as the Community Infrastructure and Housing Report, Environmental Screening Reports, and tri-annual E-ACRS review.
