Trusted Source Program

SFNS is now assisting clients with:
  • Information relating to applying for registration under the Indian Act and Secured Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) Card applications;
  • Your SCIS application if you are already a registered individual; and
  • Your Registration Under the Indian Act application.

What we do:

SFNS has been designated a Trusted Source by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) which means we’re a reliable partner and have been evaluated as able to assess identity information and assist clients in with Registration Under the Indian Act and SCIS applications. 

What we offer:

SFNS will support you with:
  • Filling out your application (SCIS and Registration Under the Indian Act);
  • Copying and verifying your documents, negating the need for a guarantor and sending in your original copies;
  • Taking your photograph on-site, following the guidelines for an approved photo; and
  • Submitting your application directly to ISC on your behalf. 

How to receive assistance from SFNS:
There are two ways you receive assistance for your SCIS and/or Registration Under the Indian Act:
  • Book an appointment at the SFNS office. Our preferred method of booking is through our online booking system. https://calendly.com/trustedsource-sfns/registration-scis-appointments however, you may also reach out directly to the Trusted Source Coordinator.
  • We will be hosting clinics throughout the year. Please watch for more information.

Eligibility
SCIS:
To apply for a SCIS, you must be Registered Under the Indian Act as well as be:
  • 16 years or age or older; or
  • 15 years of age and younger with a parent or guardian.

​Registration Under the Indian Act:
As a Trusted Source we only offer support in applying for Registration Under the Indian Act, we do not have authority to determine who is qualified to receive registration. 

What you need:

SCIS Application Requirements
Secured Certificate of Indian Status Card:

​If you were previously issued an SCIS (as an adult applicant), you can use this for your primary identification if it is valid (renewal no earlier than a year before expiry)
When you come to your appointment/clinic, you will need to bring your identification. Your ID must contain the following criteria:
  • Be issued by the provincial, territorial, federal, or state government authority; and
  • Be valid (not expired).
It must also include the following information:
◦ Your name
◦ Date of birth
◦ Your photo
◦ Your signature
Registration Under the Indian Act Requirements
Registration Under the Indian Act:

When you come to your appointment/clinic, you will need to bring your proof of birth document, and a supporting government issued identification.

Your birth document must contain the following core identity information:
  • Must contain parental information (at least one parent stated on the birth document)
  • Must be issued by a government authority, (provincial/territorial/federal government, vital statistics)
  • Must be issued in English or French (or accompanied by a professionally translated version)
  • Must contain the individual’s personal information (name, date of birth, place of birth, date of issuance, birth registration number, and certificate number)
As a Trusted Source we are able to photocopy your Proof of Birth Documents, therefore negating the need to send in your original copies.

If applying for a child both parents must be present at the time of the appointment/event, or the non-applying parent may sign the application prior to.
 
Damaged Birth Documents:
The core identity information must be visible and undamaged. The birth document will not be accepted if all three of the following criteria are missing or illegible:
• Certificate Number
• Birth Registration Number
• Date of Issuance ​
Examples of acceptable identification
Some identification options are:
  • Drivers license                                                                   
  • Passport
  • Health card                                                                         
  • Canadian Military Identification
  • Canadian citizenship card issued prior to Feb 1, 2012 
  • US permanent resident card
  • Identification card issued by province or territory                  
  • Canadian permanent resident card with signature (issued before February 4, 2012)
  • Provincial, territorial, or federal Correctional Services identification (with or without signature)

You can also use multiple pieces of identification that, when combined, include your name, date of birth, photo and signature from this list:
  • Health card issued by a province or territory               
  • US passport card
  • Government employee identification card                          
  • ​NEXUS or FAST card
  • US Old Age Security 
  • Canadian permanent resident card without signature(issued after February 4, 2012)
  • Firearms license

You can also use ONE piece of identification listed above and ONE document from this list:
  • A Guarantor Declaration form
  • Your Certificate of Indian Status
  • Your Secure Certificate of Indian status that your parent or legal guardian applied for on your behalf

If you currently have a Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) but were previously issued a Secured Certificate of Indian Status as an adult applicant (you were 16 or older when you applied for it), you may provide your CIS and a Guarantor Declaration Form.

Applying for a child, identification is the same criterion as above but must be the parent/legal guardian identification.
