Oneida Nation of the Thames
Oneida Nation of the Thames is one of the five founding Nations in the Iroquoian Confederacy, which is one of the world's oldest democracies. The confederacy refers to the political alliance between five Iroquois Nations of northeastern regions of North America. The Iroquois call themselves Haudenosaunee, which means the people of the longhouse. The Oneida Nation today continues to practice its traditions and ceremonies. The Oneida language is taught to children in school, as an effort to ensure its survival. The community's main employer is the Nation itself and is the largest First Nation community in the region.
